Wang Yi: The United States Should Adopt an Objective and Rational View of China's Development and Seek Peaceful Coexistence and Win-win Cooperation
2021-09-14 14:03

On September 14, 2021 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan jointly met the press in Singapore. One reporter asked, is there a diplomatic competition between China and the United States in the region, and how will the ASEAN countries avoid picking sides between the two countries?

Vivian said, the United States is the most advanced country in the world, and a vital partner in the region. It exerts a major influence. But the biggest success story of the last 40 years is the rise of China. As China's close friend, Singapore hopes that China and the United States can compete with each other in a constructive way, manage tensions, cooperate to address global challenges such as the pandemic and climate change, and deliver win-win results with countries in the region.

Wang Yi said, China's development has strong internal dynamism, and it is an inevitable trend of history. China's national rejuvenation is inevitable, and the goal will surely be accomplished. This is also a major achievement in the development and progress of mankind. It is an important question for the world to view China's development. During the meeting with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong a moment ago, I appreciated that Singapore could view China's development in a rational, just and objective way, seek cooperation opportunities from China's development, and achieve mutual success and common development, delivering tangible benefits to the two countries and peoples.

Wang Yi pointed out, some countries and forces in the world feel very uncomfortable with China's development, and they have doubts, or even serious misjudgments. This derails cooperation and impacts the development of normal relations. The United States may get stuck in such a process. The U.S. side should know that the United States has the right to development, and other countries also have the right to development; American people have the right to lead a happy life, and people in other countries also have the right to lead a happy life. Over 2,000 years ago, Chinese ancestors said, "All living things are nourished without injuring one another, and all roads run parallel without interfering with one another." The world should be a diverse one. True and sustainable development is development for all. There is no justification to allow one or several countries to develop, but let all other countries remain trapped in poverty. It is unfair, and against the basic conscience of mankind.

Wang Yi said, we hope the United States will, like many other countries, including Singapore, view today's China in an objective and rational manner, and seek and expand mutually beneficial cooperation with China. The cooperation between China and the United States, the two largest economies in the world, will benefit the world. In particular, the U.S. side should abandon the zero-sum game mindset. The world in progress will not regress to the Cold War era. The United States should advance with the times, learn how to seek peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation with other civilizations and nations, and jointly build a world of peace, harmony, stability and prosperity.
