Wang Yi: The UN Security Council Needs to Invoke the Rollback Terms of the DPRK-related Resolutions and Ease Sanctions against the DPRK
2021-08-06 18:29

On the evening of August 6, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the 28th ASEAN Regional Forum, concerning the Korean Peninsula issue, the legitimate and reasonable concerns of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) should be addressed given that the DPRK has stopped nuclear and long-range missile tests for years. The effective way to break the current deadlock is for the UN Security Council to invoke the rollback terms of the DPRK-related resolutions at an early date and ease sanctions against the DPRK, so as to create a positive atmosphere for the resumption of dialogue and consultation. The joint military drills by the United States and the Republic of Korea fall short of a constructive move under the current circumstances. If the United States really wants to resume dialogue with the DPRK, it should not take any action that may lead to an escalation of tensions. China will continue to support seeking balanced, parallel progress in denuclearization and the establishment of a peace mechanism in the Peninsula by taking phased and synchronized actions, so as to realize a political settlement of this issue.
