Yang Jiechi Meets with German Chancellor Angela Merkel

On January 19, 2020 local time, Yang Jiechi, President Xi Jinping's special representative, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the Libya Conference in Berlin.

Yang Jiechi expressed, as the current world situation is complex and volatile, China and Germany, as two important countries, should respect each other, strengthen cooperation, jointly practice multilateralism, work together to address global challenges and push for sound and stable development of bilateral relations. The Chinese side is ready to maintain close high-level exchanges with the German side and appreciates Chancellor Angela Merkel's active commitment to promoting the European Union (EU) to cement cooperation with China. China is ready to work with the German side and the new EU institutions to push for new development of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership.

Angela Merkel thanked President Xi Jinping for sending a representative to the Libya Conference and appreciated the Chinese side's support for multilateralism and international cooperation and its constructive role in resolving international and regional issues. Angela Merkel said, the German side will make active efforts to promote the improvement and development of Germany-China relations. I am making careful preparations for a series of important political agendas between Germany and China as well as between the EU and China this year and will maintain close communication with the Chinese side to ensure positive results.
