Remark by Spokesperson of the Embassy of China in Belgium
2019-12-11 06:39

The Embassy regrets VUB’s recent decision that the university will not extend its Confucius Institute agreement with its Chinese partner after the contract expires in June 2020.

Confucius Institutes are not-for-profit education institutes established by Chinese and overseas partners dedicated to meeting the needs of people interested in learning Chinese, while promoting understanding of the Chinese culture, as well as cultural exchanges and mutual learning. Confucius Institutes in Belgium are established voluntarily through Chinese and Belgian partnerships. They cater to the needs of Belgian people enthusiastic about learning Chinese, and enable deepened education cooperation and cultural exchanges between the two countries. Chinese language teaching is also in line with the sound momentum of China-Belgium relations and people-to-people exchanges.

We hope that VUB will step up communication with the related Chinese university and properly handle related matters, to ensure the legitimate rights of students learning Chinese and uphold the sound momentum of China-Belgium education cooperation.
