On June 22, 2005, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan while attending the International Meeting on the Iraqi Issue in Brussels. Both sides exchanged views on the Iraqi issue and the reform of UN.

Li Zhaoxing said that the Chinese side advocates fully and properly resolving the Iraqi issue in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1546 and actively supports the UN to play an important role in the Iraqi issue. China will continue to work together with the international society to strive for advancing the Iraqi reconstruction course.

Annan said that the Iraqi reconciliation and reconstruction is facing an important opportunity. The international society should support and help the Iraqi reconstruction. He hoped that China would continually play its constructive role.

On the issue of UN's reform, Li said that China supports the reform of UN so as to strengthen its authority and role and better solve the development problems. The issue should be negotiated fully and broad consensus should be reached according to the principle of democratization of international relations. The UN will hold the Conference of Heads of State and Government in September. All sides should make full preparations to help the conference achieve positive fruits.

Annan noted that he hopes that vast member states could seek broad consensus and advance the reform of UN through comprehensive discussions. It is hoped that with concerted efforts by all parties, the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the United Nations will achieve success.
