Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU Speaks on a Question Concerning the Declaration by EU High Representative on the Postponement of the Legislative Council Elections in Hong Kong
2020-08-04 20:59

Q: On August 3, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy issued a declaration on behalf of the EU on the postponement of the Legislative Council elections in Hong Kong, what is your comment?

A: Hong Kong is China's special administrative region. The region's legislative council elections are China's local elections, and hence purely Hong Kong's internal affairs. No foreign government, organization or individual has any right or reason to interfere. The Hong Kong SAR Government's decision to postpone the elections due to the severe pandemic situation is a justified and necessary step to ensure safety and health of Hong Kong citizens and the safety, fairness and impartiality of the elections. Elections were put off due to epidemics or other disasters in other places as well. The Hong Kong SAR Government followed this usual practice in making this legitimate, reasonable and lawful decision.
