2013-01-26 20:31

On January 25, 2013, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Natsuo Yamaguchi, leader of the New Komeito party of Japan at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi said China and Japan are important neighbors to each other, and bilateral cooperation in various fields has reached an unprecedented level in terms of both depth and breadth since the normalization of diplomatic relations 40 years ago, giving a strong impetus to the development of the two countries. The Chinese government attaches importance to developing relations with Japan and such a policy remains unchanged. Facts prove that the four political documents between the two countries are the ballast stone of bilateral relations, which should be abided by. Under the new situation, we should show national responsibility, political wisdom and historical duty, as the older generation of leaders of the two countries had done, to push China-Japan relations to overcome difficulties and continue to move forward.

Xi stressed that in order to maintain long-term healthy and stable development of China-Japan relations, both sides must focus on the overall situation, grasp the direction, promptly and properly handle sensitive issues between the two countries. China's position on the Diaoyu Islands issue is consistent and clear, he said, adding the Japanese side should face up to history as well as reality and make joint efforts with China through real action to seek effective methods for appropriately controlling and resolving the issue through dialogue and consultation. Only by taking history as a mirror, can we face forward to the future. Xi urged Japan to respect the national feelings of the Chinese people and correctly handle historical issues. China attaches great importance to Yamaguchi's visit which was made as bilateral relations face a special situation. China hopes that the New Komeito party will continue to play a constructive role in promoting the development of China-Japan relations.

Yamaguchi said the New Komeito party has been firmly committed to the development of friendship between Japan and China, and advocates abiding by the principles of the four political documents. As one of Japan's two ruling parties, the New Komeito party will inherit and carry forward the friendship between the two countries, promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation, push for proper settlement of relevant issues through dialogue and make positive efforts for the improvement and development of Japan-China relations.

Yamaguchi also delivered to Xi a letter from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Abe said in his letter that the Japan-China relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations and the two countries bear common responsibility for peace and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. He pledged to proceed from the overall situation and push forward the Japan-China strategic reciprocal ties.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Li Xiaolin, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, attended the meeting.
